¡Estoy muy feliz! (that's Spanish for "I'm very happy") It is a long story. Here it is:
We went to the FLL competition at the Microsoft building in Mountain View. There were so many teams at the pit area! Some were dressed as minions, as that was their mascot. One of our volunteers said they looked very cute. I think differently. We got our schedule, and saw that our practice and 1st round of the robot part of the competition were 1st, then we showed our project, which also included our robot design, and how we practiced "core values" like teamwork. Then after that, we were supposed to finish the 2nd and 3rd round of the robot part. My team member and I were in the practice round, and we did not do as well as expected; our goal was at least 300 points, we got 1. In the 1st official round we did better, but still slightly failed at our goal, as our "jackpot" for points, messed up. We then had a break. In the break we practiced working our robot.
We went upstairs to show our skit and presentation. The judges thought our skit was funny. They asked us a lot of questions. We continued to the robot design and core values, and we came out the door, I felt we did a good job. We got a huge break after that, which we used wisely to eat, drink, and practice with the robot. On the 2nd round made a big improvement, and the 3rd, our best, 207. Although it wasn't our goal, but we were happy to see we were at least in the top five.
Then came the awards ceremony. We were so excited! They gave all the teams little pins of Nature's Fury, and gave each team a certificate. They starting handing out the trophies. One team won the robot game award, another the core values award, another the robot design. We thought we would win the project award. We listened and thought we will get it, but then they said"... these girls....", so that brought our hopes. Then they brought out the champion award, and talked about the how prestigious and amazing it is. They told how it was an award for the team who were great in all parts of the competition. They started talking about what the judges said about the winning team. "These fine gentlemen...." they started, grabbing my attention. They talked about how the team showed excellency, enthusiasm, and a little humor in all parts. "This team, the only people you will find wearing a suit on Sunday..." they continued, sparking a thought in my mind that we wore suits in our skit. "The winners of this prestigious award, is ... THE ROBOMASTERS!" I was shocked. I didn't we would win the best award there. This was our first time with FLL, and had shorter time to prepare than most teams. I couldn't help but laugh. We run up gave high-fives to the coaches, and claimed our prize.
The minions tried to lift their team's spirits by singing their little song. We went to every team and gave them a "good job" and high-five. I was still very amazed that we won the most grand award. We got an automatic qualification to the next part of the tournament.
Now for the next part...
